Off-piste talking.
Welcome to the Good Life Chronicles, where living a good life takes center stage.
So much of our conversations are scripted, functional, and well… boring if we're honest. From overthinking to avoiding offense or vulnerability, we miss out on depth and insight by sticking to safe topics and safe presentations of ourselves.
In doing so, we avoid the quality thoughts and stirred emotions that make us grow. We also miss the fun of going “off-piste” (way into left-field for the non-French!) into surprising conversations that help us learn and surprise us.
This week, I’ve been having deep as much as short conversations over dinner, in the hallway, through voicenotes, and in the car with friends, colleagues and that one neighbor who always seems to be in the lift! (and luckily so, I like her). I've been struck by how good our conversations have been. Perhaps it was the time away, perhaps it’s the quality of my friends, perhaps I’ve just grown tired of my own thoughts!
From deep discussions about the role of modern relationships, how fast avocadoes grow, the shrinking of natural parks and the space for elephants, to a lack of social connection in the workplace, I’ve heard so many views and perspectives. Some I found comforting (the world hasn't changed completely), some I did not. Some I found weird, others I just learned something new. Take avocados...
And it's these rich conversations that add positive emotional experiences to our days, build meaning and strengthen micro-connections between people, whether we've just met or known them since last year. In short, rich conversations help build a Good Life.
Here's how you can add more richness to the week and use your curiosity better.
- Ask Open-Ended Questions: Move beyond “How are you?” to “What’s been on your mind lately?” This invites more thoughtful responses.
- Share First: If you want depth, start by being vulnerable yourself. Share a personal thought or experience to encourage others to do the same.
- Stretch it out: Add “What do you mean by that?” to extend conversations, reach depth and understand what people really mean.
